NOAP and Naturland Strengthen Ties to Open New Doors for Filipino Organic Farmers

By Dale Russeth, APD-NOAP

The National Organic Agriculture Program (NOAP) is taking bold strides to boost the presence of Philippine organic products on the local and global stage—thanks to its deepening partnership with Naturland, one of the world’s leading organizations in organic farming.

In a recent strategic meeting, NOAP Director Bernadette F. San Juan, CESO II, and Naturland’s Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) expert Ms. Federica Varini led the dialogue on how to create better market opportunities for smallholder organic farmers. Their shared goal: to bring more certified organic products into the spotlight and into the hands of consumers.

Naturland reaffirmed its support for NOAP’s key events this year, including the 18th National Organic Agriculture Congress and the 11th Organic Agriculture Month in November 2025. The organization has long been a vital partner in pushing the organic agenda, having played a pivotal role in the success of the 1st International PGS Summit in 2024.

Joining the meeting from NOAP were Ms. Lea C. Deriquito, Chief of Advocacy and Policy Divison (APD), and Ms. Maricris Locquiao, Development Management Officer. Representing Naturland were Ms. Joesie Tumanda, Country Officer for the Philippines; Mr. Brendan Rosen, Senior Trainer; and Mr. Nico Soldevilla, Quality Assurance Officer. All expressed strong enthusiasm for advancing the organic movement in the Philippines.

With a global membership of over 116,000 farmers across 60 countries, Naturland is known for trailblazing initiatives in organic agriculture—from aquaculture to certifying the world’s first organic tea gardens. In the Philippines alone, more than 3,400 smallholder farmers are certified under Naturland standards, gaining access to sustainable markets and fair-trade opportunities.

Since the 1990s, Naturland has been a steady ally of Filipino farmers, helping them connect with both local and international buyers. This renewed partnership with NOAP promises to create even stronger bridges—linking hardworking producers to markets that value health, sustainability, and fairness.

As the organic movement gains momentum, this collaboration offers a hopeful vision: thriving farms, empowered communities, and a healthier future for all.#OKsaOA
